Since my heating unit (water-to-water heat pump) cannot measure or record the water flow in the main water circuit, I cannot estimate whether enough water is being drawn from the pumping well. In addition to requiring factory-approved flow writing, understanding the water flow of such systems is critical for possible troubleshooting. To better focus on the primary circuit as a potential source of error, I looked around for a way to measure the flow. After a short period of research, I finally settled on an ultrasonic flow meter. The principle sounds ingenious at first: Two small ultrasonic sensors measure the flow of water from outside for the duration of the sound. The fact that the water circulation does not need to be interrupted during installation and the measurement does not affect the flow in any way is the main advantage of this technology. The only downside is that the equipment is relatively expensive. Still not very cheap, but affordable and I ended up going with the FT201 device.
The FT201 is priced between €200 and €400, excluding the power supply.
