In recent years, various new types of ultrasonic flow meters have emerged in the market, such as digital ultrasonic flow meters using digital circuits and integrated ultrasonic flow meters (combining the sensor and converter into one). Faced with a wide variety of ultrasonic flow meters, users need to select the appropriate model based on their actual situation and measurement requirements. This article will detail the differences in selecting five common ultrasonic flow meters on the market and recommend several ultrasonic flow meter solutions from China to facilitate engineers' selection and design references.

Five common ultrasonic flow meters on the market

Doppler Ultrasonic Flow Meter

This type of flow meter can only measure fluids containing a suitable amount of particles or bubbles that can reflect ultrasonic signals, such as factory effluents, untreated wastewater, and process fluids with stable impurity content. It's important to note that it has strict requirements for the measured medium; it cannot be clean water, and the impurity content must be relatively stable for normal measurement. Furthermore, the performance and requirements for the measured medium vary between different manufacturers. Choosing this type of ultrasonic flow meter requires a thorough understanding of the measured medium, as well as the performance, accuracy, and requirements of the selected ultrasonic flow meter.

Portable Ultrasonic Flow Meter

This type is suitable for temporary measurements, mainly used to calibrate the operating status of other flow meters installed on pipelines, conduct fluid balance tests in a specific area, and check the current flow rate in the pipeline. For these purposes without fixed installation, a portable ultrasonic flow meter is both convenient and economical.

Time-of-Flight Ultrasonic Flow Meter

Currently, the most widely produced and applied type is the time-of-flight ultrasonic flow meter. It is mainly used to measure the flow rate of clean liquids and is widely used in water supply companies and industrial water applications. Furthermore, it can also measure the flow rate of homogeneous fluids with low impurity content (impurity content less than 10g/L and particle size less than 1mm), such as sewage, with an accuracy of ±1.5%. Practical applications show that using a time-difference ultrasonic flow meter can achieve satisfactory results in measuring the corresponding fluids.

In-line Ultrasonic Flow Meter

Offers the highest accuracy, reaching ±0.5%, and is not limited by pipe material or lining, making it suitable for applications requiring high flow measurement accuracy. However, as the pipe diameter increases, the cost also increases. Generally, small-to-medium diameter in-line ultrasonic flow meters are more economical.

Fixed Ultrasonic Flow Meter

If sufficient installation space is available, using an insertion transducer instead of an external transducer completely eliminates the influence of pipe lining, scaling, and pipe wall on ultrasonic signal attenuation, resulting in higher measurement stability and significantly reduced maintenance. Furthermore, because insertion transducers can be installed without interrupting flow, their application is increasingly widespread.
